Indianapolis Colts wide receiver T.Y. Hilton has enjoyed an illustrious career but now faces an uncertain offseason in which he will be a free agent unless a deal gets done.

With the way general manager Chris Ballard operates, we may not know about a potential deal until a month into the offseason. But Ballard said in his year-end press conference that he still values Hilton and believes the 30-year-old can play.

“As to his ability. T.Y. can still play. Whether it’s at the level it was 4 or 5 years ago, as you get older, you have to find different ways,” Ballard said last week. “But I’ll tell you this, T.Y. is smart, instinctive, knows how to get open and he still has value. We’ll see how it works out here over the long haul. But we value T.Y. and we think he can still play. And he’s been a great Colt.”

Hilton got off to a very slow start on the season, and it appeared free agency would be almost a guarantee. But his second half of the campaign was much better and included a stretch of dominant games.

But more than what Hilton brought to the field in terms of production, Ballard lauded the veteran for his leadership and his ability to lead a room.

“He’s always been a great player, but how he has grown, as a teammate, man, he’s really special dude. T.Y. Hilton is a really special dude. Before we played Buffalo, I walked up and I said, ‘I love you. I do.’ T.Y. is not the most emotional guy but he gave me a hug,” Ballard said. “He’s special man, as a person, and as a teammate, and as a competitor.”

It will be interesting to see what will happen with Hilton in the offseason but there’s a chance the Colts value him enough to bring him back on a short contract.

The final chapters of the Indianapolis Colts’ 2020 season are not yet written, but veteran receiver T.Y. Hilton is already hoping he and Philip Rivers get a chance to pen a sequel in 2021.

The 31-year-old wideout is set to be a free agent after the season, but hopes to finish out his career in Indy.

“I want to be here,” Hilton said, via the Indy Star. “But (an extension) takes two sides. That’s up to Mr. (Jim) Irsay and Chris (Ballard) to get the job done. For me, I want to be a Colt.”

Hilton started the season slowly, but has caught fire in recent weeks. In the last five games, the speedy wideout has generated 408 receiving yards on 24 catches with four touchdowns.

The chemistry between Hilton and Rivers has clicked down the stretch, as the Colts have a chance to earn a playoff spot with a win Sunday over Jacksonville and a loss from one of the teams ahead of them in the standings.

While Rivers pondered recently that Sunday could be his final game, and also perhaps his last with Indy, Hilton did nothing to suggest he plans to walk away.

“No, not at all,” Hilton said. “Go out there and play my game, and whatever happens, happens.”

In his ninth NFL season, Hilton doesn’t plan on wearing anything but a horseshoe for his career.

“Whatever I sign for on my next contract, that’ll be when I hang it up,” he said. “Whether it’s two years, three years, four years, whatever it is. Whatever I sign for on my next contract, that’ll be it.”

Hilton hopes the Colts also bring back Rivers for at least one more year, so they can continue to build on this season.

“Absolutely, to me, he’s come in and done a tremendous job and got us in a great position, so it would be dumb for him not to be here,” Hilton said.

The futures of Hilton and Rivers are two big decisions general manager Chris Ballard will have to make this offseason. First, the club will find out Sunday if this season will continue further into January or come to a crushing end.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Colts (10-5) on Sunday wrap up the 2020 regular season by playing host to the Jacksonville Jaguars (1-14) at Lucas Oil Stadium — and, accordingly, it’s time to take a look at the team’s unofficial depth chart for the game.

Here is a position-by-position look for the Jaguars matchup, with some notes for each unit:

DeMichael Harris Jersey

» WR: T.Y. Hilton, Michael Pittman Jr., Dezmon Patmon

» LT: Anthony Castonzo, Chaz Green

» LG: Quenton Nelson

» C: Ryan Kelly, Danny Pinter

» RG: Mark Glowinski

» RT: Will Holden

» TE: Jack Doyle, Trey Burton

» TE: Mo Alie-Cox

» WR: Zach Pascal, DeMichael Harris

» WR: Marcus Johnson, Ashton Dulin

» QB: Philip Rivers, Jacoby Brissett, Jacob Eason

» RB: Jonathan Taylor, Nyheim Hines, Jordan Wilkins

» With both starting tackles, Anthony Castonzo (knee/ankle) and Braden Smith (Reserve/COVID-19 list), unable to play last Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Colts went with Will Holden at left tackle and Chaz Green at right tackle. For Holden, the game marked his first start since the 2018 season, when he was a member of the Arizona Cardinals; he ended up logging 52 snaps at left tackle last Sunday before suffering an ankle injury that knocked him out of the ballgame. It was J’Marcus Webb’s turn at left tackle next, and he finished out the game with 17 offensive snaps. It was sort of a full-circle moment for the 32-year-old Webb, who actually won the Colts’ right tackle job coming out of training camp in 2018, got the start Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals, and then ended up suffering a fluke season-ending hamstring injury running down the field late in the game while a Bengals defender returned a fumble for a touchdown. Webb then played in 14 games with eight starts with the Miami Dolphins last season.

» For a second straight week, the Colts had just two running backs log offensive snaps last Sunday against the Steelers. Jonathan Taylor started the game, and was on the field for 40 offensive snaps (58 percent), while Nyheim Hines also had 29 offensive snaps (42 percent). Jordan Wilkins ended up playing 14 special teams snaps (48 percent) on the day.

» Castonzo suffered a sprained MCL in his right knee early in the second quarter of the Colts’ Week 12 loss to the Tennessee Titans, and did not return. He ended up missing the following week’s game against the Houston Texans before returning for Indy’s Week 14 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. Castonzo was able to play all 54 offensive snaps in last Sunday’s home victory over the Houston Texans. He did not practice on Wednesday, and was limited on Thursday with a new injury to his ankle added to the report, and then missed practice on Friday. Initially ruled questionable for the Steelers game on Friday, Castonzo on Saturday was downgraded to out. The Colts could elect to move All-Pro left guard Quenton Nelson from left guard to left tackle on Sunday, and then utilize either Danny Pinter or Jake Eldrenkamp, who was just elevated to the active roster to the practice squad on Saturday, at left guard. Other options at left tackle against the Steelers, depending on who starts in Braden Smith’s place at right tackle, will be Chaz Green or Will Holden, or possibly J’Marcus Webb, another offensive lineman elevated to the active roster from the practice squad on Saturday.

» Johnson suffered a quad injury in last Sunday’s win over the Houston Texans and didn’t return to the ballgame. He would go to to miss the first two days of practice this week. With Johnson out on Sunday against the Steelers, then Ashton Dulin or DeMichael Harris could see added snaps at the wide receiver position for the Colts’ offense. The team also has wide receiver Daurice Fountain on its practice squad if needed.

» Muhammad initially appeared on the injury report Wednesday, when he was limited with an ankle issue; he then sat out Thursday’s practice. The fourth-year University of Miami product has played in all 14 games for the Colts this season as a key piece of depth off the edge, and has 21 total tackles (two for a loss) with two sacks, six quarterback hits and one forced fumble. If Muhammad is limited or can’t play Sunday against the Steelers, then Ben Banogu, Kemoko Turay or Tyquan Lewis could all be in line for an added role at defensive end behind starters Justin Houston and Denico Autry.

» DE: Justin Houston, Ben Banogu, Kemoko Turay

» DT: DeForest Buckner, Tyquan Lewis

» NT: Grover Stewart, Taylor Stallworth

» DE: Denico Autry, Al-Quadin Muhammad

» WLB: Darius Leonard, Matthew Adams

» MLB: Anthony Walker, Zaire Franklin

» SAM: Bobby Okereke, E.J. Speed

» CB: Rock Ya-Sin, T.J. Carrie

» FS: Julian Blackmon, George Odum

» SS: Khari Willis, Tavon Wilson

» N: Kenny Moore II, Isaiah Rodgers

» CB: Xavier Rhodes, Tremon Smith

» One week after logging a season-high 33 defensive snaps, defensive end Kemoko Turay last Sunday logged just eight defensive snaps against the Steelers. After working his way back from last year’s season-ending ankle injury/surgery and re-joining the team past the midpoint of this season, Turay’s role clearly seems to fluctuate on a week-to-week basis

Cheap DeMichael Harris Jersey

» Lately the Colts have been utilizing more of a rotation at outside cornerback, finding ways to get both Rock Ya-Sin and T.J. Carrie on the field throughout a given ballgame, with Carrie, of late, seemingly getting a few more snaps on a week-to-week basis. Last Sunday against the Steelers, however, it was Ya-Sin who out-snapped Carrie, 39 (57 percent) to 27 (40 percent).

» P: Rigoberto Sanchez

» PK: Rodrigo Blankenship

» H: Rigoberto Sanchez

» LS: Luke Rhodes

» KR: Isaiah Rodgers

» PR: Nyheim Hines, Isaiah Rodgers

Youth DeMichael Harris Jersey

» Rookie Isaiah Rodgers appeared to be a healthy scratch last Sunday against the Steelers, which meant the team’s kickoff returner duties were handled by Tremon Smith, who finished with three returns for 58 yards (19.3 avg.). This season, Smith has eight total kickoff returns for 180 yards (22.5 avg.).

Every year sometime during the off-season, teams will make cuts to players that might surprise people. Teams will cut players to save cap room, or they believe that player doesn’t have value to hold a roster spot.

Thankfully for the Indianapolis Colts, they don’t have any bad contracts on their roster and aren’t strapped for cash this. But there still could be some surprise cuts as there as there seems to be one every offseason.

Jordan Wilkins Jersey

Here are three Colts who could be a surprise cut during the offseason.

RB Jordan Wilkins

GM Chris Ballard End-of-Season Quote: “Marlon Mack broke my heart. That sucked. That was hard. Really hard. And it was hard on him, but he’s so tough-minded. I watched him work his butt off here all season to get back. Marlon Mack deserves a contract unequivocally. He deserves a good contract. I don’t know if we are going to be able to do that here. Saying that, I’m not going to say that ‘Marlon is not going to be back,’ because I think he’s really special as a player and I could just see a backfield of Marlon, Jonathan (Taylor) and Nyheim (Hines) and (Jordan) Wilkins be really special. So I’m not going to discount it, but I think Marlon Mack is a great player and deserves what he has coming to him. And he’s even a better teammate, unselfish, everything you want.”

Outlook: It appears unlikely that the Colts’ 2019 1,000+ rusher is back in Indianapolis, after Mack suffered an unfortunate season-ending torn Achilles in the team’s opener.

Entering into a contract season during 2020, the timing couldn’t have been worse for Mack, whose long-term future with the Colts was already murky with the arrival of highly touted rookie rusher Jonathan Taylor—in what was an expected ‘1-2’ punch at running back.

In Mack’s absence, Taylor broke out in the second half of the season and is now the team’s undisputed workhorse—while scatback Nyheim Hines provides an electric jolt behind him and operates as a dynamic receiver in passing situations.

Despite the devastating injury, Mack is just one season removed from a 1,091 rushing yard and 8 touchdown season with the Colts during 2019. To his credit too, even while rehabilitating and faced with an uncertain Colts future, Mack has been nothing but a ‘pro’s pro’ for the team’s young backfield, continuing to serve as a mentor for Taylor and others.

The Colts just don’t have the available reps to provide Mack a significant contract this offseason with their already crowded backfield (which also includes Jordan Wilkins).

However, should his free agency market prove to be cold—coming off such a tough injury, perhaps the franchise could look to bring him back on a modest 1-year ‘prove it’ contract to let him continue to rehabilitate with the team and set himself up nicely for a rebound season to show that he can still play at a high level—albeit in a reduced role.

Colts general manager Chris Ballard did something similar with veteran safety and team leader Clayton Geathers back in 2019—but hopefully, this would have better on-field results.

However, at this time, it appears more likely than not that Mack has played his last snap in a Colts uniform—although that could still change.

That’s just the cold nature and reality of the NFL’s business.

Wilkins has been on the Colts roster for the past three years now, and is entering his final season on his rookie deal. The issue here is, Wilkins is behind Jonathan Taylor, and Nyheim Hines, two running backs heavily used in the Indianapolis offense. After Week 9, Wilkins had only three games where he logged over 10 snaps, one of those came late in a blowout to Tennessee. Though Wilkins plays a bit on special teams, the running back position is short-lived in the NFL. There is a world where Wilkins is an odd man out if the Colts feel strongly about the rest of the backfield when it comes time to make cuts.

DE Ben Banogu

Youth Jordan Wilkins Jersey

With the amount of possible change coming at the edge position for the Colts, Banogu could be a starter Week 1 or he could be completely off the roster. In his first two seasons, Banogu has been less than stellar, and was a healthy scratch for the majority of the second half of the 2020 season. What is helping him is Chris Ballard’s patience when developing young pass rushers—an aspect that will likely keep him on the roster. With the amount of money Indianapolis has and the draft capital, they could invest a lot into their edge position. Whether they do or not will more than likely determine if Banogu makes the roster or ends up being a surprise cut.

K Rodrigo Blankenship

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

After what Colts fans experienced in the 2019 season with the kicking failures from Adam Vinatieri, any semblance of consistency was going to please fans, enter Rodrigo Blankenship. While Blankenship was solid, he was far from great. He was 16th in field goal percentage at 86% (32 of 37) while being fourth in attempts. Out of 27 kickers to attempt over 20 field goals in 2020, he had the sixth-lowest longest field goal made at just 53 yards.
